The hardest part of starting a home herb garden is trying to figure out where to start. It’s not as difficult as it may seem though. If you are just starting out growing herbs, then you will want to choose some of the easier varieties to grow as you learn.

If you are already into gardening, then frankly, growing herbs will be easy. You will already have a firm grasp on the things that need to be done to maintain your garden. The reality is that herb gardens for the most part, are much easier to maintain than a standard vegetable garden.

Getting Started

A home herb garden for the beginning gardener will want a very limited list of herbs that will include only those that are useful to you. Once you have that figured out, then you need to check out the growing conditions for each of them. Many people do not realize that each variety of herbs grows in a different manner and requires different conditions. For your first home herb garden, it’s best to choose those that grow under similar conditions to make things easier for you as you learn how to properly maintain them in a healthy manner. That way, you can concentrate on the steps involved in order to realize the biggest harvest from your garden.

Another thing to consider is perhaps leaving out any herbs that are difficult to grow in your first garden. If you lack experience in a home herb garden, then these are probably best left alone until you are easily able to recognize when there is a problem with you plants.

Location, Location, Location!

Now you have to decide where you want to place the garden. Those who have an existing garden will generally set aside a small patch within it to grow their herbs. Still others will prefer to maintain their home herb garden inside the house. The use of flower pots, boxes or even coffee cans, which are actually perfect for the task, and all that is really needed to grow a thriving herb plant. These indoor gardens also go a long way to adding a certain charm to the home as well as becoming part of the décor. Herbs have been known to grow successfully in hanging baskets as well. Placement of the herb garden is really only limited to your own imagination!

One thing that you have to do though is pay careful attention to the care required by your chosen herbs. That is to say, many herbs require lots of sunlight, so if you plant outdoors, choosing a shady area is not the best option. On the other hand, if you decide to grow them indoors, then you will be able to move the pots around as needed for the sunlight requirement. Likewise, there are certain varieties that will fare better in the shade, so just the opposite will be true of the previous statement.

Other Considerations

Other things that you will need to consider when planning your home herb garden are the soil conditions. Some of these herbs will survive on just enriched soil, with nothing additional needing to be done, while others will require that you fertilize them periodically to realize the best yields at harvest time.

Setting up a home herb garden is not difficult, though it may sound that way. It’s just that it important that you know what conditions are expected for each individual plant in order for the garden to be successful as a whole. Seed packets will give you a general idea of how the seed should be handled, and planted, while more in-depth information will guide you down the proper path to a successful harvest.
